Daniel O'Rear was born on 23 December 1759 at Prince William County, Virginia.3,4 He served several tours of duty with the Militia after 1776, including one tour with George Rodgers Clark. He received a pension under the Act of 1832. A document, signed by Daniel, was found in 1947 preserved in his father’s desk at Cloverfield and recorded an agreement related to one tour of service when he was 17 years old.5,6 He was in military service as Private in the Virginia militia for three months as a substitute for his father in 1777 at Prince William County, Virginia.7,8 He was in military service as a private in the Virginia Militia for eight months in 1778 at Prince William County, Virginia.7 Daniel O’Rear served as a private with his brothers Jessie O'Rear (private) and John O'Rear (sergeant) in Helm’s company of Virginia volunteers. (Helm's company was part of George Rodgers Clark’s command when he made his expedition against Virginia and Kentucky in 1778 well known to us all from school histories). All three brothers received land grants in the Indian Territory in recognition of this service, although none of them actually homesteaded their grants. John and Daniel O’Rear both applied for pension under the Act of 1832 and received pensions. Both told of this service in their applications. Daniel O’Rear’s application (No. S7376), dated Dec. 31, 1846, tells of their service:

He remained at his father, John O’Rear’s till the spring of the year 1778 and in April he went under Col Rogers Clark as a private in the secret expedition to Illinois in the west which service he did not set forth at large in his former declarations hoping that he should be able to furnish the testimony of two men, Robert Garret and John O’Rear who were with him in said service under Col. Clark and whose certificates he has procured and placed in the hands of James Foster of Prince William who says he deposited the same in the war office at Washington. That the said service of eight months and a few days in 1778 under Col. Clark in the West was performed under the command of Captain Leonard Helm who was raised in Prince William County and who at the time resided in Kentucky was connected in some way with the Indians in the West, that said Helm came into his native County Prince William and made the call for volunteers and himself the said Daniel O’Rear, Joseph Anderson, Moses Kemper, Tillman Kemper, James Holmes, Robert Garrett, James Woods, James Garrett, Charles Jones, John O’Rear, Jesse O’Rear, Richard Luttrell, and Benjamin Kendale (privates) and Levy Todd was 1st, Henry Floyd was second Leiutenant of the company under Helm making fifteen who went from Prince William County and were his acquaintances and neighbors at the time of the said service. These men formed themselves into a company at the house of his father, John O’Rear of Prince William and marched under the direction of his brother John O’Rear till they reached the said Helm at the present courthouse in said county and then went on to Winchester his company marched on to Red Stone old fort on the Monogahelia River and remained there until the volunteers in that section had collected together and then marched on to the site of Wheeling where there was a fort erected and from Wheeling his company went on to the falls of the Ohio where headquarters was formed and all of the forces had collected together and from the falls of the Ohio his men went to the extensive wilderness to the town of Kaskaskia then called Illinois, a town of considerable size and residence of the governer named Rosebly a Frenchman in the British Service, that his forces reached the town in that summer season on one Saturday Night the moon shown very bright about midnight his men saw the Sentinel on watch or guard of said fort of Illinois leave his post and went in the fort and his men immediately made the attack and took the governer and fort without firing a single gun and governer was himself asleep in the fort, this was harvest time and he had given a feast and there was a great frollick in the fort that after taking said fort all the town surrendered to his forces that his men then marched on and took the fort of St. Vincennes in the same county on the Wabash River about 50 miles and thar the said governer of these parts and he thinks his name was Rosiblay was taken prisoner as before stated by his men and brought on here to Richmond in the state of Virginia and he understood was afterwards exchanged for General Lincoln who was defeated at Charlestown in South Carolina that after reducing the forts before mentioned together with several other villages the name of which he has entirely forgotten some time in July He thinks, his men started back for home taking with them the said governer and went to the said falls of Ohio and so to Virginia thence on by Staunton in the said state and thence to Richmond and delivered the governer and then went on and reached their home in Prince William County a few days before Christmas of 1778. That from a Application made by his brother John O’Rear that there were precisely one hundred and seventy seven men including officers in said service under Col. Clark and including Captain Montgomery’s men who he understood were mostly from Pittsylvania County in Virginia but served with his men in this tour. That of this tour of service he has always had a distinct recollection that it was a laborious undertaking and the men saw very hard service and were greatly exposed during the tour both to the enemy and to hardships.5,9 Daniel Orear was a Revolutionary War Soldier. Pension application S7376 has the page from the family Bible containing the birth dates of all his siblings.3 He was in military service as a private in the Virginia Militia for six months in 1780 at Prince William County, Virginia.5,7 He appeared on the tax list at Prince William County, Virginia, in 1787.10 He witnessed the will of Capt. Daniel O’Rear, Revolutionary War Patriot as narrated in his pension application

Daniel O’Rear (no. 75) was son of John O’Rear (no. 26) of Faquier County, Virginia. He was a pensioner under the Act of 1832. His application for Pension recounts his service with the Virginia Militia and later with the North Carolina Militia after the family moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1779. His pension application dated March 4, 1834 states in part.

After the expiration of his last term of service, he removed with his father’s family, of which he was a member to Wilkes County North Carolina. In a short time after their removal to North Carolina as he believes about the 1st of September 1779, there was a call upon the militia and he volunteered to serve a term of 3 months in the company commanded by Captain Richard Allen, The company was formed at Wilkesboro and about the last of December was called upon to Charleston, V. Carolina. On the march we passed through Charlotte in Mecklinberg County, Camden, S. Carolina and Monk’s Corner and at Charleston we joined a regiment which he thinks was called Hampton the army was commanded by Genl. Lincoln. Here he remained until his three months expired and was regularly discharged. During this term a detachment from the army at Charleston was sent up Ashley River to the ferry 12 miles above the City, he belonged to the detachment and they had at that place a skirmish with the enemy.

The term of service of several of the militia regiments having expired, about the time of his last discharge at Charleston he volunteered after his discharge as above to serve 3 months longer and served as orderly or 1st. sergeant in the company commanded by Captain John D. Lawman, and was attached to the regiment commanded by Col. William Loyble. Here he remained in service until the city and Army was surrendered to the enemy on the 11th of May, 1780. On the 20th he was paroled and permitted to return home about which time the three months expired and was voluntarily discharged.

In 1780, after his return home from Charleston he volunteered tho a prisoner on parole to serve for an indefinite time in a company commanded by Capt. Martin Gamble, without any particular organization. We were engaged 5 or 6 weeks in marching about the country under the command of Col. Cleveland. During this time we several slight skirmishes with the tories.

In the month of October 1780 while a prisoner as above, his father’s house was attacked and robbed by the tories. His discharge and parole papers were in his father’s trunk, which was taken, and in that way all his discharges were lost.5 Daniel O'Rear was enumerated with Thomas D. O'Rear in 1850 on the Census at Fauquier County, Virginia.15 Daniel O'Rear died after 1850 at Fauquier County, Virginia.13

Col. William O'Rear was born on 1 December 1761 at Prince William County, Virginia.2,5,6,7 He was in military service as a private in the Virginia Militia in 1780 at Prince William County, Virginia.8 From the O'Rear Family Sketches:

William O’Rear, Tavern Keeper in Boonesborough, Kentucky in 1786

Colonel William O’Rear (the title is probably from later militia service) was an early settler at Boonesborough, Kentucky. He had been, as a young man of 17, a Revolutionary War soldier, and following the war, went to Boonesborough as a merchant. He was a surveyor, real estate agent, merchant, town keeper and had the dubious distinction of being perhaps the first slave trader west of the Alleghenys. He later was a pioneer settler in Alabama, locating on “Orear’s Bluff” on the Black Warrior River, and finally moved to Boone County, Missouri. These two letters, preserved in his father’s desk in Virginia (see sketch No. 47), tell of his tavern venture. Madison County, Kentucky, Court Order records show “William Orear was granted license to ‘keep ordinary’ in 1786.”
