     Enoch O'Rear was also known as Enouch.3 He was born on 18 February 1763 at Prince William County, Virginia.4,5,6 He was a farmer.2 He witnessed the anecdote of Col. William O'Rear in 1786; From the O'Rear Family Sketches:

William O’Rear, Tavern Keeper in Boonesborough, Kentucky in 1786

Colonel William O’Rear (the title is probably from later militia service) was an early settler at Boonesborough, Kentucky. He had been, as a young man of 17, a Revolutionary War soldier, and following the war, went to Boonesborough as a merchant. He was a surveyor, real estate agent, merchant, town keeper and had the dubious distinction of being perhaps the first slave trader west of the Alleghenys. He later was a pioneer settler in Alabama, locating on “Orear’s Bluff” on the Black Warrior River, and finally moved to Boone County, Missouri. These two letters, preserved in his father’s desk in Virginia (see sketch No. 47), tell of his tavern venture. Madison County, Kentucky, Court Order records show “William Orear was granted license to ‘keep ordinary’ in 1786.”

     John Henry O'Rear was born in 1811 at Prince William County, Virginia.2 From the O'Rear Family Sketches:

John O’Rear, Poet

John H. O’Rear, last of the name to own the Cloverfield plantation in Prince William County, Virginia, was a bachelor. His philosophy is found expressed in his “Day Book” of 1836 wherein he records: “Beauty is a fading flower” and “Beauty will not last”. He also records the following literary effort:

     The Voice of Her I Love
     How sweet at close of silent eve,
     The harp’s responsive sound.
     How sweet the n.... that n..’.. diecive,
     And diede by virtue crowned;
     How sweet to sit beneath a tree
     In some delightful grove;
     But, oh: more soft, more sweet to me
     The voice of her I love;
     Whenev’er she joins the village train,
     To hail the new born day,
     Mellifluent notes compose each strain,
     Which zephyrs waft away.
     The frowns of fate I calmly bear,
     In humble sphere I move,
     Content and blessed whenever I hear
     The voice of her I love.
                         John H. O’Rear.3 He appeared on the census of 1860 at Lansdowne, Virginia.4 From the O'Rear Family Sketches:

The Midas of Prince William

A History of Prince William County, Virginia entitled “Prince William Its People and Its Places.” published in 1941, on page 111 states in part:
"At 2.9 miles on County 608 is Fairview (R), sometimes called the Jerry Herndon place. A large stone chimney stands at the south end of the dilapidated story and a half house, and all the outbuildings have disappeared. The owners of Fairview were Milton Fitzhugh, M.W. Jenkins, Charles E. Sinclair, George Bryan, Henry M. Horton, and Jeremiah Herndon. Stories lingering about Fairview have to do with the mistreatment by Herndon of his six sons and his few slaves. It seems that his sons were never allowed to know their own ages and were kept illiterate so that Herndon might obtain several years of additional labor after maturity has been reached. Jeremiah Herndon quickly converted his profits into gold and hid them securely until 1872, when an ex slave, who had little love for the family, discovered the hiding place, killed Herndon and his wife, and made away with the cherished possessions of this Midas of Prince william. When the negro spent some of the gold, however, he was caught and tried and hung at Brentsville. Various excavations, still discernable in the basement of the house are explained by the accepted belief that Herndon had hidden more gold than was discovered by his murderer. No one, it seems, found a single sparkling coin."

Fairview was not far from Cloverfield, home of John O’Rear (no. 3) and Mrs. Holmes, who owned Cloverfield, told the writer in 1930, upon my visit there, this same story, stating that the Negro involved had been one of the O’rear family’s servants, and that John H. O’Rear last of the name to own Cloverfield had spent a lot of money trying to save his former servant from this ignoble end.

After Cloverfield had burned, I visited the site in 1952, while on active duty in the Army reserve at Ft. Meade, Maryland. Arriving in the vicinity of the home I noticed the name Herndon on a mailbox and stopped to ask directions. Upon introducing myself to Mr. Herndon, he said excitedly, “Yes, this is the very house where that O’Rear Negro killed my grandfather.” I told Mr. Herndon that I renounced the actions of the negro, but my ancestors had left there about the time of the Revolutionary War and we really had nothing to do with it. Mr. Herndon kindly took me to the site of Cloverfield which was nearby.3 He died on 19 March 1886 at Prince William County, Virginia.2 He was buried after 19 March 1886 at Cedar Run Cemetery, Quantico Marine Base, Virginia.5,6
