George McFadden O'Rear wrote to Judge E. C. O’Rear and gave the following very interesting tradition about the origins of the family:

“Our family in America, as it was related to me by my father, springs from John O’Rior, an Irish Baron of the court of Charles I. When Charles was seized, John O’Rior fled to Armagh County, Ireland and took with him one of the younger ailing children of the King a girl by the name of Elizabeth after giving out that the child had died and purporting a dead child’s body as hers.

"In 1654 he came to America and settled with his family and ward in New Jersey. The spelling of the name either for phonetic or other reasons became O’Rear.

"Later his own son, John and his ward, Elizabeth were married and the family migrated south to Virginia. Just when I do not know.

"My father also told me, as part of the story, that Prince Charles (Charles II) was very fond of his family and during the period of his exile came to Jamestown, Virginia in search of his sister, but did not locate the O’Riors.12 He was also known as Capt.1 He ended military service on 30 June 1949 retiring with the rank of Rear Admiral after almost 34 years with the U.S. Navy.7

RAdm. George McFadden O'Rear died on 30 May 1979 at Massillon Community Hospital, Massillon, Ohio, at age 83.8 He was buried after 30 May 1979 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.8

    1. There was never an Irish Baron named John O'Rior (or any varied spelling of the name).
    2. King Charles I's did not include anyone (of historical interest) by the name of John O'Rior (or any variation).
    3. King Charles I's daughter, Elizabeth is said to have died at Carrisbrook Castle on the Isle of Wight a year after her father was executed (see Encyclopedia Britannica). However, other sources disagree, saying that her death was faked and no one knows of her later life or death.
    4. No record have been found of a marriage between a John O'Rea (or any spelling) and an Elizabeth in New Jersey or elsewhere.
    5. It is known that Charles II never came to America at any time during his life.
