Thomas Holeman Dean Thomas Holeman Dean was born in 1800 in Jessamine County, to James Dean and Patience Holeman Dean. James a soldier of the Revolution, and Patience, came from Rowan County, North Carolina, and were early settlers of Kentucky. According to Railey, they first came to Woodford County, where they remained quite a while at Craig’s fort, and then eventually settled in Jessamine County, near Nicholasville.

In 1822 Thomas married Prudence Messick in Jessamine County, and together they had five children: James H., William R. (William R. Dean was the proprietor of Dean House on Morgan Street in Versailles), Emanual R., Elizabeth and Matilda. In 1830, Thomas is listed in the census for Woodford County. In 1835, Thomas remarried. His new wife Malinda Rowland was the daughter of Henry Rowland and Elizabeth Ann Orear Rowland. Their marriage produced four children: Jeremiah R., David T., Emily and Charles H.

Thomas was listed in the 1850 census as a manufacturer, probably because he owned and operated a grist mill. By the 1870 census, he was listed as a farmer and owned two farms that totaled more than 1,000 acres. One of his farms, known as the Dupuy Place had a stone house. That stone house is still standing and it is now known as Stoney Lonesome. It was on this property that his grist mill was located. Today the mill is gone. The Dupuy Place was bequeathed by his will to his children by his first wife. His second farm, known as the Smithey Place, was similarly bequeathed to his children by his second wife. Thomas and Malinda are buried in the Versailles cemetery near his son William R. Dean and other family members.2 He was born on 19 March 1800 at Jessamine County, Kentucky.2,3,5 He married Malinda Rowland, daughter of Henry H. Rowland and Elizabeth Ann O'Rear, on 22 December 1835 at Woodford County, Kentucky, 2nd wife.1,2,7 Thomas Holeman Dean was Manufacturer in 1850.2,8 He Value of Real Estate in 1850 Census was $6,000.00 in 1850.2,8 He Value of Real Estate in 1870 Census was $8,400.00, "Personal Estate" valued at $500.00 in 1870 Census in 1870.2,9 He was Farmer in 1870.2,9 He died on 17 February 1877 at Woodford County, Kentucky, at age 76.1,2,10,11

Judge Jerry Rowland Dean
1841-1917

Jerry Rowland Dean, son of Thomas Holman Dean and his wife Melinda Rowland Dean, was born at Mortonsville, Ky. (Woodford County) on April 10, 1841. His grandfather, James Dean, having served on side of the Colonies in the Revolutionary War, settled in Kentucky (Jessamine County) in 1783 (actually they went first to Woodford County, and then eventually settled in Jessamine County).

Judge Dean and Elizabeth Arnold Dale, who died at Woodward, Okla. on May 1, 1910, were married in Woodford County, Kentucky in December, 1864.

He was educated in the local schools of Woodford County, including Thornton Academy, which he attended two years, and taught school for three years, studied law, and was admitted to the bar and in 1872 removed to McPherson, Kansas, where he engaged in the practice of the law, and later removed to Deaf Smith County, Texas, and participated in its organization and was its first County Judge, and served one term from that district in the lower house of the Texas Legislature.

In 1861 he inlisted in Co. G, 21st Ky. Regiment, U.S.A., and after battle of Stone River became its 2nd Lieutenant, and in that capacity served until the close of the Civil War.

To him and his wife were born eleven children, nine of whom survived him: Thomas H. Dean, Amorita, Oklahoma; S. Elmore Dean, 641 Church Ave., Bozeman, Mont; William Thornton Dean, Oakland, Calif; Mrs. J. J. Long, 922 N. Euclid Ave., El Dorado, Ark; Mrs. C. J. E. Lowndes, 1609 Van Buren St., Amarillo, Texas; Mrs. Harry F. Miller, 3697 Lugo St., Lynwood, Calif., and Mrs. H. H. Alexander, 1207 N. W. 26th St., Oklahoma City, Okla. The following children are now deceased: Mrs. J. C. Matthews (died Aug. 20, 1925), Newton Dale Dean (died Fairview Mont., Dec. 24, 1938), Charles H. Dean (died Nevada, Nov. 1904), and Jerry Rowland Dean (died at McPherson, Kansas, infant, in 1875).

At the opening of the Cherokee Outlet he came to Woodward where he resided and practiced law until failing health compelled his retirement. The end came at noon, Sunday, July 1, 1917, when he passed peaceably away. As an honored citizen of the city, county state, with an active interest in public affairs, a speaker and orator of unusual ability and a leading member of the bar and a member of the local G. A. R. organization, and faithful member of the Methodist Church and actively affiliated with the Democratic party, and a fine citizen, he will be remembered.

D. Thornton Dean died last evening at 5:30 o'clock at his home on North Maple Street. He had been ill for several years and death was chiefly due to old age. He was aged 70 years, 10 months, and 27 days. He leaves to cherish his memory a wife and three children: Mrs. Maggie Guy, McPherson; Dr. G. R. Dean, McPherson; Mrs. Bettie Van Blaricum, Mineola. He has a sister, Mrs. Emma Dale, in California, and a brother, J. R. Dean, of Woodward, Oklahoma.
