14. Until Death Us Do Part
Louise Hampton ORear was a daughter of Enoch ORear (no. 163) and granddaughter of Jesse ORear (no. 12) who lived near Paris, Va. in Clarke County. She married (3 January 1861) Dr. Thomas Lee Settle who was Surgeon of the Seventh Virginia Cavalry, C. S. A. (a part of Turner Ashbys command.) The following account is from a description (author unknown) of the family cemetery at Liberty Hiss, home of Benjamin ORear (no. 8) near Paris, Virginia:
"Louise H. Settle, who was an ORear, b. in 1833 and died in 1884 was buried at Liberty Hill. Dr. Settle, who served in the Confederate Army as a surgeon for the 7th Cavalry, regularly rode horseback from Paris to visit the grave of his wife. When he became blind he had himself driven by carriage and asked the driver to point him to his wifes grave. When Dr. Settle (b. 1836) died in 1920 he was buried at Ivy Cemetery in Upperville and his wifes body was moved from Liberty Hill and buried with him. A carved Italian marble bird bath now stands over the spot where Mrs. Settle was originally buried."
